No Invitation To Sultan of Sokoto For Chapel Groundbreaking – CAN

Christian Association of Nigeria CAN

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has dismissed reports claiming that the Sultan of Sokoto Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar was invited to play a key role at the planned foundation ceremony of an ecumenical chapel at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja.

NOP NIGERIA reports that the association, through its media office in Abuja, made it clear that it did not send any invitation to the Sultan for the event. It explained that the information being circulated did not come from CAN and should not be linked to the body.

CAN stated that the document causing the confusion originated from the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF). It said at no time did it issue or approve any message inviting the Sultan in connection with the chapel project.

The body said it was necessary to correct the impression quickly because its name had been wrongly attached to the claim. According to the association, linking it to such an invitation was incorrect and misleading.

It also raised concern that the report may have been designed to stir tension, especially along religious lines. CAN warned that spreading such claims without proper checks could create unnecessary division among Nigerians.

The group restated its role in promoting peace and mutual respect across different religious groups in the country. It said its mission includes protecting Christian worship while also supporting harmony among all citizens.

CAN urged journalists, public figures, and Nigerians in general to verify information before sharing it. It advised people to focus on facts and avoid spreading unconfirmed reports.
