New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani is expected to issue his first veto, blocking a City Council bill that would create protest-free buffer zones around schools. The measure passed last month by a 30-19 vote.
A separate bill establishing no-protest zones around synagogues and other houses of worship passed 44-5 and is expected to become law. Mamdani said he supports protections for religious institutions but objected to the school bill’s broad definition of educational institutions.
