Former Ogun State governor, Ibikunle Amosun, has denied claims that he asked or pressured other aspirants to withdraw from the 2027 senatorial race in Ogun Central.

The denial followed reports from a stakeholders’ meeting of the Ogun Central Senatorial District held in Abeokuta on Thursday to discuss the possibility of adopting a consensus candidate.

According to reports from the meeting, Amosun was alleged to have listed three aspirants who had agreed to step down for him.

However, the claim triggered backlash, with the affected aspirants publicly denying holding any such discussions or agreeing to withdraw from the race.

Reacting on Sunday through a statement issued by his media office, Amosun described the reports as a misrepresentation of what transpired at the meeting.

In the statement titled “Ogun Central APC Meeting: Setting the Record Straight – Amosun,” the former governor said it would be undemocratic and unacceptable for him to ask any aspirant to step down.

He explained that the meeting, held at the residence of former Ogun State governor Olusegun Osoba, was convened amid speculations about his interest in contesting the senatorial seat in the All Progressives Congress ahead of the 2027 general election.

Amosun stated that during the meeting, he only recalled that three aspirants had previously visited him to seek his support and had voluntarily indicated they would withdraw if he decided to run.

He maintained that at no point did he request any aspirant to withdraw from the race, stressing that such action would go against democratic principles.

The former governor also reiterated that he would not participate in any party primary election whose outcome is predetermined, while urging the media to verify facts before publishing reports about political meetings.
