The Oniroyin Support Initiative (OSI), a non-profit humanitarian organisation, will on Thursday, April 30, 2026, hold its second Empowerment Programme for journalists in Ogun State, with financial grants, medical outreach, and welfare interventions for media practitioners and families of deceased journalists.
The event, scheduled to take place at Basic Trust International, beside Providus Bank, Oke-Ilewo, Abeokuta by 12 noon, is also being held in honour of the late OSI Convener, Comrade Ambassador Tunde Oladunjoye, who died on April 4, 2025, at the age of 58.
In a statement jointly signed by the Chairman and Secretary of the Board of Trustees, Comrade Olufunke Fadugba and Comrade Adekunle Olayeni, the organisation said the initiative was part of efforts to sustain Oladunjoye’s vision of creating a social safety net for journalists.
According to OSI, the programme will feature the presentation of cheques and grants to selected beneficiaries to support their welfare and economic stability, alongside a free medical outreach for journalists and invited families of deceased media professionals.
The medical component will include consultations, health screenings, medication, and referrals aimed at addressing both immediate and underlying health concerns among practitioners.
The organisers disclosed that the programme will be chaired by prominent real estate entrepreneur and Chief Executive Officer of Pelican Valley Nigeria Limited, Ambassador (Dr) Babatunde Adeyemo, while the Special Adviser on Media and Strategy to the Ogun State Governor, Hon. Kayode Akinmade, will deliver the keynote address.
Expected dignitaries at the event include the Ogun State Head of Service, Mr. Kehinde Onasanya; wife of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Chief (Mrs.) Bola Obasanjo; and former Deputy Speaker of the Ogun State House of Assembly, Hon. Remmy Hazzan, among others.
Goodwill messages from prominent figures and civil society organisations are also expected, alongside testimonials from families of deceased journalists, highlighting the impact of the intervention programme.
OSI reaffirmed its commitment to improving the welfare of journalists, noting that the initiative was established to support media professionals facing economic hardship, chronic health challenges, and to provide assistance to families of deceased practitioners.
“With the input of distinguished media professionals, our late Convener birthed the idea in his quest to give back to his primary constituency — journalism,” the statement read.
“A year after his passing, his vision of a social safety net for media practitioners remains the heartbeat of this organisation. This second edition of our empowerment outreach is therefore dedicated to sustaining that legacy through direct support to those in need within the journalism community,” it added.
The organisation further stated that OSI also seeks to promote the dignity of the journalism profession by providing welfare, emotional support, and, where possible, facilitating opportunities for dependants of deceased journalists.
For enquiries regarding the programme, OSI urged interested persons to contact the Secretary, Board of Trustees via oniroyin247initiative@gmail.com or 08055075217.
