Members of the Oyo State House of Assembly have unanimously endorsed the Speaker, Adebowale Ogundoyin, as their preferred candidate to succeed Governor Seyi Makinde in 2027.
The endorsement was announced during plenary on Wednesday, signalling early political alignment ahead of the next governorship election in the state.
The motion for Ogundoyin’s endorsement was moved by the Deputy Speaker, Muhammad Fadeyi, who represents Ona Ara State Constituency.
Fadeyi, while presenting the motion, said the lawmakers had collectively resolved to mobilise residents across the state in support of the Speaker’s governorship ambition.
The Deputy Speaker described Ogundoyin, who represents Ibarapa East State Constituency on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, as a stabilising force within the legislative arm of government.
According to him, the Speaker has demonstrated leadership qualities capable of sustaining governance in the state beyond the current administration.
He added that Ogundoyin possesses the competence and political experience required to take over from Makinde in 2027.
Also speaking, the Majority Leader of the House, Sanjo Adedoyin, commended the Speaker’s leadership style and performance.
Adedoyin described Ogundoyin as “a leader who has demonstrated capacity beyond expectations,” noting that his track record in the Assembly sets him apart as a credible successor.
Other lawmakers who spoke during the plenary threw their weight behind the endorsement, stressing that Ogundoyin’s performance has shown he is ready for higher responsibility.
They maintained that his leadership of the Assembly has brought stability and progress, making him a suitable candidate for the state’s top job.
The lawmakers also pledged their full support for his aspiration, vowing to work towards ensuring his emergence as governor in 2027.
The endorsement marks one of the earliest open political declarations ahead of the 2027 governorship race in Oyo State, with lawmakers positioning Ogundoyin as a key contender to succeed Makinde at the end of his tenure.
