Atlético Madrid manager Diego Simeone has admitted that Julian Alvarez is attracting interest from several of Europe’s biggest clubs, including Arsenal, Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain.
Speaking at his pre-match press conference ahead of Wednesday’s Champions League semi-final first leg against Arsenal at the Metropolitano Stadium, Simeone was asked about speculation surrounding the Argentine forward.
“I’m not inside Julian Alvarez’s head,” the Argentine said when asked about reports linking his country man with Arsenal.
“I understand it’s normal that an extraordinary player like Julian Alvarez is wanted by Arsenal, Paris Saint-Germain, Barcelona.
“It’s normal because he is very good.”
Alvarez only joined Atlético Madrid in 2024 from Premier League side Manchester City but has already become a key figure in Simeone’s squad.
Meanwhile, Simeone also provided an update on Ademola Lookman’s fitness, with the forward still not fully cleared to return ahead of the Arsenal tie.
Lookman picked up the injury during the Copa del Rey final defeat to Real Sociedad, forcing him off in the second half. He has since missed La Liga matches against Elche CF and Athletic Bilbao, raising doubts over his availability for the European showdown.
During the press conference, Simeone praised the impact of the Nigerian international while stressing that a late decision will be made on his involvement.
“The truth is that his arrival has had a very positive impact on the team,” he stated at the pre-match press conference via Futbol Fantasy.
“He truly possesses some distinguishing offensive qualities.
“He is improving significantly in his defensive contributions. We will assess his recovery tomorrow, as he was still experiencing some discomfort today. Therefore, we will determine if he can assist us tomorrow or not.”
Since arriving from Atalanta in the winter transfer window, Lookman has become an important part of Atlético’s attacking setup.
The former African Footballer of the Year has registered two goals and two assists in six Champions League appearances this season, including a decisive strike against Barcelona in the quarter-finals.
His goal helped Atlético secure progression to the semi-finals after a dramatic tie in which they withstood a strong comeback attempt from Barcelona following a 2-0 deficit at Camp Nou.
NOP NIGERIA has earlier reported that Lookman had said he would be available for the semi-final clash.
