Society of Gynaecology and Obstetrics of Nigeria (SOGON), has endorsed a new treatment, Ferric Carboxymaltose (FCM) to combat spate of anemia in pregnant women.
President of SOGON, Prof. Okechukwu Ikpeze, stated this at a just concluded 2-day SMART Advocacy workshop in Abuja, organised by SOGON in collaboration with International Federation of Obstetrics and Gynecology, on Policy and Implementation pathways for Feric Carboxymaltose (PIP-FCM) in Nigeria.
He described anemia in pregnancy as a major contributor to maternal complications and deaths in Nigeria and added that the newly introduced drug, already in use globally, offers a significant advantage over older treatments.
“Unlike previous therapies that require multiple doses, this drug is administered once through an intravenous infusion and effectively restores blood levels,” he said.
SOGON said the drug has undergone extensive testing in Nigeria through research led by the University of Lagos. The studies, conducted across multiple locations including Lagos and Kaduna, involved thousands of women and demonstrated strong safety and effectiveness outcomes.
SOGON stated that its role is purely advisory and advocacy-driven, adding, “We do not manufacture or sell the drug. Our priority is to ensure that women who need this treatment can access it,”
