Sokoto East Senator, Ibrahim Lamido, has resigned from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), blaming the party’s failure to address the worsening insecurity and hardship affecting his constituency.
Lamido announced his resignation in a statement issued on Saturday, saying the decision was taken in the interest of the people he represents.
“I, Senator Ibrahim Lamido, representing the good people of Sokoto East Senatorial District, hereby resign from the APC with immediate effect,” he said.
“My decision is based on the party’s failure to safeguard the people I represent and the hardship currently being faced by them.”
The senator had recently raised concerns over the persistent banditry and violent attacks across communities in Sokoto East, lamenting that many residents had been displaced from their homes.
He said the insecurity had also disrupted farming and other economic activities, worsening the suffering of families who depend on them for survival.
Lamido further maintained that he had repeatedly drawn attention to the deteriorating security situation at the federal level, but was disappointed by what he considered an inadequate response.
Sokoto East, which covers local government areas such as Sabon Birni, Isa and Rabah, has in recent months recorded repeated attacks linked to banditry, resulting in deaths, kidnappings and destruction of property.
