Former governors of Nigeria’s Southeast region have launched a forum to support incumbent governors and enhance governance across the zone.

The forum, inaugurated on Tuesday, April 7, 2026, at the Presidential Lodge, Government House, Enugu, aims to leverage the experiences of past leaders to advance development and policy implementation.

Six former governors attended the meeting, including Martins Elechi and Engineer David Umahi of Ebonyi state, Sullivan Chime and Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu, Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia, and Chris Ngige of Anambra.

Their attendant reflected the forum’s nonpartisan approach and commitment to collaboration.

Reading the communiqué on behalf of the forum, Federal Minister of Works, Engineer David Umahi, said the body would serve as a platform for guidance and support to current governors.

“The forum of former governors of the Southeast is formed today, April 7, 2026. Our goal is to advise and support the current governors in driving progress for our people,” Umahi stated.

The forum commended incumbent governors for achievements in infrastructure, security, and citizen empowerment.

Umahi also praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for appointments of Southeast indigenes to key positions and for ongoing regional projects.

“We commend the great work of our governors and appreciate Mr. President for supporting their initiatives. The infrastructure development across the Southeast reflects a commitment to progress,” he said.

In a notable political move, the forum endorsed Tinubu’s re-election, signaling unity between past and current leadership in the region.

“This forum represents strategic thinking. All Southeast governors are supporting Mr. President’s re-election, and we are committed to continuing that support,” Umahi added.

Acknowledging that some former governors were absent due to medical trips or other engagements, Umahi expressed confidence in increased participation at the next meeting.

“We are confident that over 90 percent of former governors of the Southeast will be in attendance,” he said.

“This is purely a support platform. They are the leaders, and we are here to provide guidance and encouragement where necessary,” Umahi concluded.
