Activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has called for the “total occupation” of MTN Nigeria, accusing the telecom giant of chronic service failures despite its market dominance.

In a post on his official X account on Thursday, April 23, 2026, Sowore urged Nigerians to occupy MTN offices, lamenting unexplained data loss, frequent call drops, and lack of accountability.

He attached a 2026 subscriber chart from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) showing MTN controls 51.8% of the country’s 182 million telecom subscribers far ahead of Airtel (34.1%), Glo (12.3%), and 9mobile (1.8%).

“Why MTN must face total occupation by Nigerians!” Sowore wrote. “They dominate Nigeria’s telecom space but operate with reckless disregard for their customers. Data vanishes without explanation, calls fail repeatedly, and accountability is nonexistent. MTN is totally and irreversibly irresponsible.”

The post triggered strong reactions from frustrated subscribers. While many echoed complaints about poor service, others questioned the call for occupation.

One user, Olu of Rage, wrote: “The frustration with MTN’s service issues is real and unacceptable. But ‘total occupation’ isn’t the answer. Stronger regulation by the NCC, proper enforcement, and genuine competition will serve customers better.”

Other reactions highlighted the lack of competition in the sector, with some blaming government complicity and calling for more players to challenge MTN’s dominance.

Several users also renewed complaints about rapid data depletion and unreliable connectivity.

The outburst comes amid ongoing public scrutiny of MTN’s service quality in Nigeria, where the company maintains a commanding lead in the telecom market.
