President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Friday directed key economic managers in his administration to urgently examine measures to mitigate the harsh economic effects of the ongoing US-Israeli war on Iran on Nigerians.
The directive was issued during a civic reception in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, following the commissioning of key projects executed by Governor Douye Diri.
Also in attendance was the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Mrs. Didi Esther Walson-Jack, an indigene of Bayelsa State.
Four governors — Hope Uzodimma, Dapo Abiodun, Umo Eno, and Sheriff Oborevwori — accompanied the President, while the Deputy Governor of Borno State, Umar Usman Kadafur, represented Governor Babagana Zulum.
Former Delta State Governor James Ibori and Senator Ben Murray-Bruce were among dignitaries present.
President Tinubu reiterated that his administration is conscious of the economic challenges triggered by the Middle East conflict and is committed to addressing them through coordinated fiscal and policy responses.
“Yes, I hear you from various angles of the economy. The fuel prices are biting hard. But look around. Let’s thank God that we are better off listening to what is happening in other African countries, what they are going through.”
The President assured Nigerians that his government remains focused on cushioning the hardship faced by vulnerable citizens.
“This is a government that cares. We will look at the numbers with the Ministry of Finance, Budget and Economic Planning.”
He further emphasised that the All Progressives Congress remains committed to delivering people-oriented governance.
“Regardless of their shenanigans, the All Progressive Congress (APC) believes that the people deserve to see governance translated into roads, bridges, power, jobs and real opportunities that affect human beings. That signals the development of our country.
“We are all working hard. The projects that I commissioned today demonstrate and testify to an immutable truth: Development advances further, faster when the federal government and the state government work in partnership and towards a shared purpose.”
President Tinubu commended Governor Diri for executing impactful projects aligned with the Renewed Hope Agenda.
“Douye, you’ve done a great job. I have commissioned some projects, very transformative projects. The bridge, linking communities and the dual carriageways, create opportunities, jobs, and hope for our nation. Thank you for that commitment, and thank you for being a very progressive governor.”
He also recalled his efforts in establishing an Independent Power Plant as Governor of Lagos State, reiterating his administration’s resolve to ensure energy sufficiency nationwide.
The President assured continued collaboration with subnational governments to drive job creation and skills development.
At the event, a minute’s silence was observed in honour of fallen members of the Armed Forces and former Bayelsa governor Diepreye Alamieyeseigha.
Earlier, the President inaugurated key projects, including a 60MW gas-fired Independent Power Plant in Elebele, Ogbia LGA, the 630-metre Angiama–Oporoma Bridge, and the New Yenagoa City Road.
In his remarks, Governor Diri credited the Federal Government’s policy support for enabling the delivery of the power project.
“Your administration’s decisive policy interventions have paved the way for meaningful reforms in various sectors, including power, enabling us to deliver on our pledge of reliable, independent energy through the construction of these 60-megawatt gas-fired turbines.
