Former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, on Tuesday urged the African Democratic Congress to unite and present a viable candidate ahead of the 2027 general elections.
NOP NIGERIA reports that Amaechi made the call while speaking at the party’s national convention held in Abuja.
Addressing party members, Amaechi stressed the need for unity among stakeholders, warning that victory in 2027 would require strategic planning and consensus.
Amaechi stated, “ADC must decide on a viable candidate. President Tinubu will not give us power.”
He also questioned alleged attempts to restrict opposition activities.
“Why would government officials deny you to gather when the constitution gives you that right?” he asked.
The former governor of Rivers State accused the current administration of undermining democratic principles.
“How can a man who claimed to be a democrat be stopping democracy? Tell me what to tell President Tinubu,” he said.
Amaechi further alleged that those in power were not prioritising governance.
He also criticised the government over the rising wave of insecurity across the country, noting that many Nigerians have been killed, displaced or kidnapped.
Amaechi urged ADC leaders to close ranks and provide a credible alternative to the current administration.
In a strongly worded remark, the former minister accused some government officials of prioritising personal gain over public service.
“If you accuse me of anything I didn’t do, I will go to any length to defend myself, but these guys do not care at all. What they care about is money.
“They don’t deny that they are thieves and land grabbers,” Amaechi added.
