Presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, has explained why he declined an invitation to attend the recent opposition summit held in Ibadan, Oyo State.
Sowore said he rejected the invitation because he believes Nigerians need a genuine alternative to existing political actors rather than what he described as a recycling of failed leaders.
In a statement shared on his social media page on Sunday, Sowore criticised the summit, arguing that many of the politicians involved had previously played roles in Nigeria’s political and economic challenges.
He said there was no reason to believe that individuals who had overseen years of corruption and stagnation could suddenly transform into champions of progress.
The activist also stated that his party, the African Action Congress, would not participate in what he called a political arrangement meant to repackage old political figures as a new opposition force.
According to him, the AAC remains focused on building a people-oriented movement centred on accountability, integrity, and real change.
Sowore further criticised major political parties across the country, accusing them of promoting similar political practices despite presenting themselves as different.
The opposition summit took place at the Oyo State Government House in Ibadan and brought together several prominent political figures, including former President Olusegun Obasanjo, who chaired the meeting, and Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, who hosted the gathering.
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso were also among those who attended the summit.
Organisers said the summit was aimed at strengthening unity among opposition parties and creating a coordinated strategy to address Nigeria’s socio-economic and security challenges ahead of future elections.
