President John Mahama has emphasised the close relationship between Ghana and Nigeria, saying he prays daily for Nigeria to succeed because of its importance to the region.

Mahama who spoke in Accra, Ghana’s capital, described both countries as “twins of the same mother,” noting that their rivalry is mostly limited to friendly disagreements over jollof rice and football.

He said Nigeria’s stability is important to Ghana, citing the deep historical and cultural ties between the two nations, including migration links connected to Yoruba heritage.

Mahama noted that Nigeria’s large population makes its success vital to neighbouring countries.

“If Nigeria does well, Ghana does well,” he said, adding that he prays daily for Nigeria to improve its governance and stability.

Beyond bilateral relations, Mahama urged African leaders to rethink how the continent manages its natural resources.

He criticised past practices where foreign companies received large concessions that created wealthy enclaves while surrounding communities remained poor.

He also highlighted the role of the African Continental Free Trade Area in boosting trade among African countries, saying it represents progress despite early challenges.

Mahama concluded that Africa’s future depends on strong leadership and collaboration, stressing that the continent has the talent and resources needed to create prosperity for its people.
