As political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections gather momentum, Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago-Iwoye, Ogun State, has concluded plans to host a national discourse on leadership and governance in Nigeria.
The event, organised by the institution’s Faculty of Social Sciences, is the fourth in its annual open lecture series and is themed, “Politics and Governance in Nigeria: The Leadership Question.”
According to a statement issued on Friday by the faculty, the lecture will hold on Monday, May 1, 2026, at the OGD Hall of the university.
The lecture is expected to attract scholars, political leaders, policymakers, civil society actors, media practitioners and students, among others, to deliberate on issues shaping Nigeria’s democratic and governance landscape.
The Vice-Chancellor, Ayodele Johnson Agboola, will serve as the Chief Host, while the Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences, Dele Odunlami, is the host.
The statement added that the guest lecturer, Adebola Ismail Akindele, would lead discussions on leadership challenges, governance deficits and pathways to national development.
The faculty noted that the lecture is designed to stimulate intellectual engagement on critical issues such as democratic consolidation, accountability, citizen participation and institutional reforms.
It added that the choice of theme reflects growing concerns over the quality of political leadership amid economic challenges, insecurity, youth disenchantment and increasing calls for governance reforms.
Odunlami, in the statement, described the lecture series as a platform for constructive engagement on pressing national and global issues.
He said, “Universities must continue to provide intellectual direction and policy alternatives to societal challenges. This lecture is part of our contribution to national conversations on governance, leadership and the future of Nigeria.”
Also speaking, Agboola described the lecture as timely, stressing the role of higher institutions in driving ideas, innovation and national development.
He urged stakeholders, including students, academics and policymakers, to leverage the platform to deepen conversations around responsible leadership and good governance.
The faculty reiterated its commitment to advancing scholarship, policy discourse and interdisciplinary research through conferences, seminars and public lectures focused on governance, democracy and sustainable development.
It added that members of the university community and the general public are invited to attend the event.
