Hon. Oladipupo Adebutu has emerged as the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in Ogun State for the 2027 general election, pledging that the poll would be “a must-win” for the opposition party.
Adebutu, who flew the party’s flag in the 2023 election, was returned unopposed as a consensus candidate at the party’s governorship primary held in Abeokuta on Sunday.
His emergence followed an affirmation process conducted across the 236 wards of the state, with delegates endorsing his candidacy ahead of the primary.
Chairman of the Governorship Primary Panel, Chief Afolabi Ariyo, formally declared Adebutu winner through a voice vote.
“I hereby declare that Hon. Oladipupo Olatunde Adebutu is the winner and is returned as the consensus candidate,” Ariyo announced.
The exercise drew the attendance of key party leaders, including a former Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, who expressed confidence in the PDP’s chances in the next governorship election.
Fayose said the outcome of the primary reflected renewed hope for the party in Ogun State, adding that Adebutu’s political trajectory was now firmly fixed on becoming governor.
“After today, Ladi Adebutu can only be Governor. He cannot be Deputy Governor. He cannot be Senator,” Fayose stated.
In his acceptance speech, Adebutu described his emergence as historic and appreciated party leaders, stakeholders and members for their unanimous support.
He expressed confidence that the PDP would reclaim power in the state, insisting that lessons had been learnt from the 2023 election, which he claimed the party won but was denied.
“However, this time in 2027, I believe in God that your votes will count and will put me in office as your duly elected governor,” he said.
Adebutu called for unity among party members, stressing that internal cohesion would be crucial to defeating the ruling All Progressives Congress.
He criticised the APC-led government in the state, accusing it of presiding over hardship despite Ogun’s “abundant natural and human resources.”
“Our collective responsibility now should be focused on returning our party to the seat of power in Oke-Mosan in order to rescue our people from suffering and maladministration,” he added.
Earlier, the Ogun State PDP Chairman, Abayomi Tella, said the peaceful conduct of the primary demonstrated that the party had overcome its internal crises and remained united.
Tella urged members to sustain the momentum and work towards securing victory in the 2027 governorship election.
