Arsenal are set to hand manager Mikel Arteta a new contract that would make him one of the highest-paid managers in world football, according to reports.

Arteta has led the club to their first league title in 22 years, with the triumph confirmed on Tuesday night after Manchester City failed to beat Bournemouth.

His current deal was due to expire next summer, but talks over an extension are said to be well advanced, with an agreement expected to come with a significant pay rise.

Arteta currently earns around £10 million a year, plus an additional £5 million for qualifying for the Champions League.

The new deal is expected to see him earn figures closer to what Atletico Madrid’s Diego Simeone takes home, with the Argentine currently regarded as the highest-paid manager in world football at £26 million a year.

Pep Guardiola, Arteta’s former boss at Manchester City, earns around £20 million annually.

Arteta will also take over from Guardiola as the longest-serving manager in the Premier League when the Spaniard departs City this summer.
