During an interview on Arise Television on Wednesday, May 20, 2026, Sanusi Bature spoke about the political future of the New Nigeria Peoples Party and ongoing discussions involving former Kano State governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso ahead of the 2027 election.…....
Bature stated that the NNPP could no longer stand strongly on its own ahead of the next general election, noting that key stakeholders within the party had agreed on the need to seek a broader political alliance.
According to him, discussions were held with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress as their preferred option for possible collaboration, with Kwankwaso reportedly insisting on personally meeting Tinubu before any formal decision could be made.
He said a meeting date was fixed but later cancelled by Kwankwaso, who reportedly traveled to China and never arranged another appointment.
Bature also dismissed speculations about a possible political alliance between Peter Obi and Kwankwaso, describing the idea of an Obi-Kwankwaso ticket in Kano as surprising and politically difficult to understand.
According to him, “For us, when you say ‘Obi’ in Kano, it’s actually strange news, and many people are even surprised that the same Kwankwaso who said he has a PhD, Obi has just an undergraduate degree. The same Kwankwaso who said he is more experienced politically and otherwise than Obi. The same Kwankwaso who has seen Obi as just a Biafra agent is now craving for him to be the vice president to Obi.”
Bature added that considering Kwankwaso’s previous public remarks about Obi’s qualifications and political standing, he does not believe such a partnership would succeed.
