Former Inspector-General of Police, Baba Usman Alkali, has withdrawn from the Yobe State governorship race under the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Alkali announced his withdrawal in a statement made available to journalists on Wednesday, ending his governorship ambition ahead of the 2027 general elections.
He said the decision followed extensive consultations with Vice President Kashim Shettima, Yobe State Governor Mai Mala Buni, Borno State leaders, and other key stakeholders.
“After due consultations and exhaustive meetings with the Vice President, Federal Republic of Nigeria, Senator Kashim Shettima, GCON, the Executive Governors of Yobe and Borno State, elders and political associates, as well as some very critical stakeholders across the seventeen Local Government Areas, I have decided to withdraw my aspiration to the governorship ticket ahead of the 2027 general elections,” he said.
Alkali said the decision was taken in the interest of party unity, stability, and the progress of the state, urging his supporters to remain calm and continue to support the APC and its eventual candidate.
The retired police chief was among six APC aspirants who had earlier rejected the emergence of Baba Malam Wali as consensus candidate and demanded direct primaries in line with the Electoral Act and party guidelines.
The aspirants included Senator Ibrahim Bomai, Mustapha Maihaja, Bashir Machina, Usman Baba Alkali, Kashim Musa Tumsah, and Lawan Kolo Geidam.
With Alkali and Lawan Kolo Geidam now stepping down, the number of aspirants has reduced from six to four.
However, both men have reportedly declined to endorse the party’s preferred candidate, Baba Malam Wali.
