The Federal Government has called on Nigerians to support five innovative national projects that have advanced to the final voting stage of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) Prizes 2026 competition.
The appeal was made by the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr Bosun Tijani, in a post shared on X on Wednesday, May 6.
According to the minister, the projects reflect Nigeria’s growing commitment to using technology and innovation to drive inclusive growth, improve infrastructure, strengthen digital security, and support national development.
The five nominated projects span different categories in the global competition and are expected to compete with initiatives from other countries for top recognition.
The projects include:
- Project 774 Local Government Connectivity Network – AL C2: ICT Infrastructure
- Build-A-Thon – AL C4: Capacity Building
- Child Online Protection (COP) Programme – AL C5: ICT Security
- Telecom-Based Research Grant Initiative – AL C6: Enabling Environment
- NIPOST Agro-Infrastructure & Logistics Initiative – AL C7: E-agriculture
Tijani urged Nigerians and supporters of local innovation to participate in the online voting process to help increase the visibility of the country’s digital initiatives on the global stage.
“These projects reflect our bold vision for a digitally empowered Nigeria and a strong testament to our commitment to leveraging technology for inclusive growth and national development,” the minister stated.
The WSIS Prizes competition is organised by the ITU as part of efforts to recognise projects and activities that leverage information and communication technologies to advance sustainable development goals globally.
The competition attracts entries from governments, private organisations, civil society groups, and institutions across different countries.
Public voting forms part of the evaluation process used to identify outstanding projects in each category before final winners are announced.
Rules and Guidelines for Voting
Public online voting identifies the five projects per category with the highest number of valid stakeholder appreciations. Voting results are considered as one input into the overall evaluation process.
Only registered members of the WSIS Stocktaking Platform with complete information, including organisation name, type, country, and user details, are eligible to vote.
Each registered stakeholder may vote for one project per category, while all votes are weighted equally.
Voting across all categories is encouraged but not compulsory.
Focal points of submitted projects will receive updates on voting progress at the end of each week.
WSIS Stocktaking also reserves the right to review and validate voting results to ensure fairness and compliance with the competition’s rules and guidelines.
In addition, the organisation may use details submitted by stakeholders for purposes related to the WSIS Prizes process.
Voting for the competition is expected to close on May 13, 2026.
