The accident happened last night, Friday, as the students – believed to be members of the Student Union executive – were on their way back to Calabar. Eyewitnesses say the victims arrived at the hospital with serious injuries, including bleeding wounds and bandages on their heads.
But instead of receiving urgent care, they were reportedly turned away.Videos circulating on X (formerly Twitter) and Facebook show chaotic scenes at the hospital: injured students lying in a vehicle, worried crowds, and staff in safety vests moving around.
The clips have gone viral, with the caption “General Hospital Calabar rejects UNICROSS Students that were involved in a ghastly motor accident Odukpani.”Social media users are furious. One person wrote, “What is wrong with our Nigerian hospitals?” Another commented, “This is so heartbreaking. These students are fighting for their lives and you reject them?” Many called it “heartless” and demanded answers from the state government.
According to reports from Calabargist and other local sources, the UNICROSS Vice Chancellor has now stepped in. The injured students have been moved to other hospitals in Calabar where they are receiving treatment.This sad story has sparked fresh calls for better emergency care in Cross River State.
