Nollywood actress Bolaji Ogunmola has shared insights into the early challenges she faced in her acting career, revealing how industry stereotypes shaped the kinds of roles she was offered at the beginning of her journey.
According to the actress, her physical appearance played a major role in how casting directors initially perceived her.
She explained that her dark skin tone and curvy body type often influenced the roles she was considered for, limiting her opportunities in a highly competitive industry.
At a time when fair-skinned actresses were more prominently featured in mainstream productions, she found herself constantly pushed into repetitive character types.
Ogunmola noted that filmmakers attempted to confine her to stereotypical “side chick” roles, a pattern she says was common in the industry during that period.
She described this experience as frustrating, as it did not reflect her full range as a performer or her desire to take on more meaningful and diverse characters. Despite these limitations, she remained determined not to be defined by industry expectations.
Speaking during a conversation with content creator Joseph Onaolapo, the actress explained that she had to fight against being boxed into narrow character categories.
She emphasised that consistency and resilience played a major role in her ability to grow beyond those early setbacks and establish herself as a recognised figure in Nollywood.
Her journey into the film industry was not without setbacks. Ogunmola previously participated in the Next Movie Star reality competition, where she did not make it to the final stages.
However, she has often described this moment as part of her learning process rather than a failure, using it as motivation to continue improving her craft.
Over time, her persistence began to pay off, allowing her to transition into more substantial roles that better showcased her acting ability.
She has since become known for her versatility and strong screen presence, gradually breaking away from the stereotypes that once limited her career path.
Beyond acting, Ogunmola also revealed that she pursued entrepreneurship alongside her entertainment career. She explained that she never saw herself working in a traditional office environment and always had a strong desire to build something of her own.
According to her, financial independence and creativity were key motivations behind her decision to venture into business.
She added that while she respects individuals who work in the corporate sector, her personality and goals were more aligned with a flexible and creative lifestyle.
This entrepreneurial mindset, she noted, has helped her maintain balance in an industry that can be unpredictable.
