Hospitals are meant to be places where lives are saved and restored, but unfortunately, that was not the case for a young man.

His family hoped doctors would stabilise his condition before it was too late, but despite their efforts, the situation ended tragically.

Mutie’s father was heartbroken as he narrated how his 19-year-old son died, alleging that medical negligence had cost his precious life.

“I arrived at the hospital at 4pm. The doctors told me they were preparing to treat my son, but they wanted him to undergo a scan first. I borrowed KSh 14,000. I even borrowed money from women working at M-Pesa shops. They sent me money until it was enough. We went and did the scan,” he narrated.

Mutie’s father painted a heartbreaking picture, claiming his son was allegedly neglected as nurses were busy having lunch instead of attending to him.

He alleged that other patients who arrived later were attended to while his unconscious son remained unattended.

“I sat with my unconscious son on the bed. I saw three patients enter and receive treatment, but no medicalstaff attended to me. I stayed with my son from 5pm to 10pm. No doctor approached us, and no one even knew what was wrong with my son. My son was in a very bad state.

Whenever I called a doctor, they would tell me to call someone else. There was another patient next to us, and a doctor came and checked his scan. I asked the doctor to check my son’s scan, too, but the doctor ignored me. My son died next to me. I feel terrible,” he said.

Kenyans sympathise with Mutie’s dad

Kenyans sympathised with Mutie’s father as he walked away wiping tears after losing his son, who many believed could have been saved.

Maggymalaba Thatcher:

“In healthcare, there is something called prioritisation skills. Those healthcare workers are aware of that. Act on high-risk cases as you politely inform those waiting about the emergency that may cause delays. Those individuals must be held accountable.”

Mwangi Wainaina:

“Kelvin cannot die in that hospital, and then tomorrow it becomes you, then me, then our children. People demonstrated over the poor state of hospitals in Mbeere and were shot. I wish we had leaders who could make things work for us, even if we never become as rich as they are.”

Liz Rita:

“It also happened to me at Mama Lucy Hospital. A doctor told me to go for imaging. I queued for hours, only for the doctor to later tell me to seek treatment elsewhere. Imagine arriving there at 8am and leaving at 4pm without treatment.”

Raini Samuel:

“How do you let someone die in the presence of so many doctors without acting urgently? The young patient was in the right place at the right time, but the system failed him. The family should sue the hospital and everyone on duty during that shift.”

Kariuki Lucy:

“It once happened to me there, too. I had a ruptured ectopic pregnancy, but the nurse allowed people she knew to enter before me. The doctor later realised what had happened and scolded her badly. She apologised, and I forgave her after expressing my frustration. Sorry to this family.”
