The Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency has raised fresh concerns over deceptive pricing practices among businesses, warning that hidden charges and misleading price claims are eroding consumer trust and violating established laws in the state.
The agency’s General Manager, Afolabi Solebo, issued the warning on Monday, 4 May, 2026.stressing that the trend where goods and services are advertised at attractive rates but attract additional costs at the point of purchase has become increasingly prevalent, prompting regulatory attention and enforcement measures.
Solebo explained that such practices undermine transparency and infringe on consumers’ rights, noting that all advertised prices must be clear, accurate and inclusive.
He emphasised that businesses have a responsibility to present pricing in a manner that does not confuse or mislead buyers.
He further warned that tactics such as unclear pricing structures, fake discounts and bait-and-switch strategies designed to lure unsuspecting customers would not be tolerated, adding that the agency is prepared to enforce compliance.
The LASCOPA boss cautioned businesses that engage in promotional campaigns, discounts or raffle draws to avoid vague expressions such as “while stock lasts,” explaining that such terms could breach consumer rights if not properly defined.
According to him, businesses must clearly state the duration of such offers, including precise start and end dates, as well as all conditions attached to the promotion.
“Failure to comply with fair pricing and advertising standards constitutes an offence under the Lagos State Consumer Protection Law, particularly under ‘the right to be informed,’ and will attract appropriate enforcement actions, including penalties, sanctions, and possible prosecution,” he said.
In addition, Solebo urged business owners across sectors including supermarkets, online vendors, automobile dealers, electronics stores, service providers and retailers to review their pricing and advertising methods to ensure full compliance with regulatory standards.
He also encouraged consumers to report cases of misleading pricing and false advertisements through the agency’s official complaint channels, reaffirming LASCOPA’s commitment to safeguarding consumer rights and promoting a fair, transparent and competitive marketplace across Lagos State.
