Man United target Tonali, Ederson in massive summer rebuild

Manchester United are preparing an ambitious summer midfield rebuild with Newcastle United’s Sandro Tonali and Atalanta star Ederson emerging as major targets under manager Michael Carrick.

The Premier League club are looking to strengthen their squad ahead of a return to Champions League football next season, with midfield reinforcement now seen as a priority at Old Trafford.

According to reports from Sky Italia, Tonali has been identified as one of United’s top targets after an impressive campaign with Newcastle.

The Italy international featured in 53 matches across all competitions this season, including 11 appearances in the Champions League.

United are reportedly hoping the prospect of regular Champions League football could persuade Tonali to consider a move away from St James’ Park.

However, Newcastle are understood to be reluctant to sell one of their key players to a direct Premier League rival.

Tonali’s technical ability, consistency and experience at the highest level have reportedly made him a major target for Carrick’s rebuild.

United are also pursuing Atalanta midfielder Ederson as part of plans to overhaul the centre of the park.

The Brazilian enjoyed another strong season in Serie A, making 41 appearances while contributing three goals and two assists for the Italian side.

At 26, Ederson is widely expected to leave Atalanta this summer after four successful years in Bergamo.

Reports claimed Manchester United are prepared to offer €45m for the midfielder despite interest from Atletico Madrid.

Although Atletico are said to have previously agreed personal terms with the player, they have yet to meet Atalanta’s valuation.

United are now hoping to move ahead in the race as Carrick pushes for energetic midfielders capable of fitting into his tactical approach.

The club’s recruitment plans also follow reports that Casemiro is expected to leave at the end of the season.

Ederson’s versatility and Tonali’s passing range are reportedly viewed internally as qualities capable of transforming United’s midfield ahead of next season.

The club are now working to complete key transfer business before the start of pre-season preparations.
