Mass Defections Rock PDP in Oyo as Reps, Aspirants Quit Ahead Of 2027

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Oyo State has been hit by a wave of high-profile resignations, with serving lawmakers, party chieftains, and aspirants dumping the party amid deepening internal crises ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Among those who have exited the party are members of the House of Representatives, Anthony Adebayo Adepoju, who represents Ibarapa Central/North Federal Constituency, and Adedeji Dhikrullahi Stanley Olajide, representing Ibadan North-West/Ibadan South-West.

Also joining the exodus are the Chairman of Oluyole Local Government, Akeem Olatunji,  alongside several other party members across the state.

Findings indicate that the mass resignation is largely driven by unresolved leadership tussles within the PDP at both state and national levels, which stakeholders fear could jeopardise their political ambitions.

Adepoju, popularly known as Ibarapakan, blamed his decision on the lingering leadership crisis in the party, noting that the situation had created uncertainty about the future.

Similarly, Olatunji, in a resignation letter dated May 5, 2026, attributed his exit to persistent disagreements within the party’s national leadership.

He, however, appreciated the support he received during his time in the PDP and said consultations were ongoing regarding his next political move.

Another federal lawmaker, Odidiomo, also confirmed his resignation, describing the decision as difficult but necessary due to prevailing realities within the party structure.

He said his move was informed by the need to pursue his political aspirations in an environment that guarantees inclusiveness, stability, and progressive engagement.

The spate of defections is expected to trigger fresh political realignments in the state, as stakeholders reposition ahead of the next election cycle.
