Mbata wins Imo East Senate ticket

The Imo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress has declared Prince Alex Mbata winner of the party’s senatorial primary election for Imo East Senatorial District ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Mbata emerged victorious after polling 121,680 votes in the exercise conducted by the party in the state.

The result was announced on Monday by the Chairman of the House of Representatives Primary Elections Committee, Rear Admiral Kayode Williams (retd.), who also served as the returning officer for the election.

Declaring the outcome of the primary, Williams said Mbata satisfied all the constitutional and party requirements for the contest and secured the highest number of valid votes cast.

He said, “I, Rear Admiral Kayode Williams (retd.), the duly appointed chairman of the House of Representatives Primary Elections for Imo State and the returning officer for this election, hereby formally declare Alexander Mbata, having satisfied all the requirements of the party for this election, as well as relevant laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and having scored the highest number of valid votes, 121,680 votes, winner of the Imo East Senatorial District primary election, 2026. Congratulations, sir.”

The declaration was made at the Owerri Zonal Office of the APC, where party members, supporters and stakeholders gathered for the exercise.

Mbata’s emergence followed the withdrawal of one of the leading aspirants in the race, Dr Chijioke Kaduru, who stepped down from the contest just minutes before voting commenced.

Kaduru’s withdrawal paved the way for Mbata to secure a decisive victory in the primary election.

The APC primary in Imo East was part of the party’s nationwide exercise to elect candidates for the National Assembly ahead of the next general elections.
