Speaking in an interview with Trust TV on Monday, May 18, 2026, Amaechi revealed that El-Rufai was already battling health issues before his detention. He warned that any deterioration in El-Rufai’s condition while in custody could trigger a major crisis the government may find difficult to handle.
Amaechi called on the authorities to release El-Rufai so he can return home and continue receiving proper medical care at a hospital. He also urged the government to grant him access to his legal team and allow him to attend court proceedings from home.
According to Amaechi, his biggest fear is that El-Rufai’s health could worsen in detention, stressing that such an outcome would create avoidable tension.
In his words: “The fear I have is that El-Rufai was ill, he went to the hospital. I hope he does not die in detention. That would spark off what the government cannot manage. The earlier they let him go home and continue treatment, the better for everyone.”
