The Nigeria Democratic Congress has zoned its presidential ticket for the 2027 general election to the southern region, as part of efforts to promote equity and rotational leadership across the country.

The decision was reached on Saturday during the party’s national convention, where delegates adopted a resolution following a motion moved by Afam Victor and seconded by Seyi Sowumi.

In the same vein, the party approved that its presidential ticket for the 2031 election would be zoned to the northern region, reinforcing its commitment to a north-south power rotation arrangement.

The convention also ratified all members of the party’s National Executive Committee after a motion moved by Victor Umeh, who represents Anambra Central in the Senate.

Party sources said the zoning formula is part of a broader strategy to ensure inclusivity and balance in its leadership structure ahead of the 2027 elections.

Earlier in the week, Buba Galadima, a close associate of Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, had hinted at the arrangement, insisting that the party had firmly ceded its presidential slot to the South.

“We have zoned the party’s presidential candidature to the South. There is no ambiguity about it,” Galadima said, adding that the party would adopt a primary election process rather than a consensus arrangement.

The development comes amid shifting alliances within Nigeria’s opposition space, with stakeholders intensifying consultations ahead of the next general election cycle.

The zoning decision is also seen as aligning with the long-standing advocacy for power rotation championed by Peter Obi and other opposition figures, who have repeatedly called for equity and fairness in the distribution of political power.

Although the party had earlier dismissed reports of a zoning agreement, including alleged talks with former President Goodluck Jonathan, the latest resolution appears to have settled internal debates on the issue.

Political analysts say the move could shape emerging coalitions and influence candidate alignments as opposition parties reposition ahead of 2027.
