Nigeria and the United States of America have strengthened bilateral military cooperation with the inauguration of the Defence Institutional Technical Working Groups (DITWGs) under the 2026 Defence Cooperation Roadmap aimed at tackling terrorism, insecurity, and regional instability.
The development marks another major step in ongoing security collaboration between both countries as Nigeria continues efforts to strengthen counterterrorism operations and institutional military capacity.
In a statement signed by the Director of Defence Information, Samaila Uba, the inauguration ceremony took place in Abuja and brought together defence officials from both nations.
According to the statement, the initiative is designed to deepen strategic coordination, improve institutional planning, and enhance the operational effectiveness of the Armed Forces of Nigeria in confronting emerging security threats.
Speaking during the event, the head of the United States delegation, Cate Dave, stated that the initiative would strengthen institutional capacity and support long-term strategic planning within Nigeria’s defence architecture.
According to Uba, Dave emphasised that effective institutional development remains critical in denying terrorists and criminal networks safe havens across the region.
The US delegation leader further highlighted the importance of sustained defence cooperation in confronting transnational threats capable of undermining regional peace and security.
On the Nigerian side, the team leader of the delegation, Air Vice Marshal Francis Edosa, described the partnership as strategic and timely considering the evolving nature of security challenges confronting Nigeria and the West African region.
Edosa noted that the collaboration would focus on strengthening the warfighting capabilities of the Armed Forces of Nigeria while improving operational responsiveness against terrorist and criminal elements.
According to the statement signed by Uba, the Nigerian defence delegation stressed the need for improved coordination, technical cooperation, and institutional reforms capable of restoring enduring peace and normalcy across affected areas of the country.
Both Nigeria and the United States also underscored the importance of accountability, measurable outcomes, and sustained collaboration in achieving the objectives of the defence roadmap.
The inauguration of the Defence Institutional Technical Working Groups further reinforces strategic military ties between Abuja and Washington amid growing concerns over terrorism, insurgency, and regional instability in parts of Africa.
