As part of the activities to commemorate its 70th anniversary, the Nigerian Navy on Monday organised a sea tour for civilians in Lagos and some other states.
Founded on June 1, 1956, the navy will mark 70 years of existence in June 2026.
In Lagos, the Nigerian Naval Ship (NNS) Kada sailed more than 500 civilians from the Apapa area to the open waters of the Atlantic Ocean and back to Apapa.
The navy organised the sea tour to give civilians an insight into some of its operations and provide them with firsthand experience on NNS Kada, one of the largest ships in its fleet.
The initiative was tagged “Sail with the Nigerian Navy”.
Speaking before the sea tour, Abubakar Mustapha, the flag officer commanding (FOC) western naval command, said the exercise was organised for the navy to interact with civilians, who have showed immense support in the last 70 years
Mustapha said in the last seven decades, the navy had done excellently well to protect Nigeria’s water territory.
“This is a very historic occasion, which is the 70th anniversary of the Nigerian Navy. We call it the platinum anniversary,” he said.
“Specifically, ships are open for visits today and sea trip. You know, it is an opportunity for us to interact with civilians, to show love and camaraderie to the navy as well as solidarity.
