Nigerian Teacher Raises Alarm Over Rising Drug Abuse Among Teenagers

A Nigerian teacher, Joy Njoku, has raised alarm over the growing rate of drug abuse among secondary school students after a disturbing incident involving two male students allegedly linked to hard drugs.

Sharing her experience on Facebook, the traumatised teacher recounted how an SS1 student suddenly collapsed and started convulsing during school hours, leaving teachers and students in panic.

According to her, the student was rushed to the staff room where teachers battled to keep him alive as he foamed from the mouth and appeared close to death.

“We were praying, calling his parents and doing everything possible to stabilise him,” she wrote.

The teacher said the boy was eventually taken home by a staff member alongside some classmates, only for them to return minutes later with a shocking revelation that the student had allegedly consumed hard drugs given to him by his “best friend” and classmate.

She revealed that before the confession, teachers had questioned the same friend about the boy’s condition, but he allegedly claimed the victim only complained of a headache earlier in the day.

Further searches reportedly uncovered hard drugs inside the suspect’s school bag.

“In powdered form, before the teacher could identify it, he quickly threw it into his mouth and swallowed it,” she narrated.

The teacher added that another substance wrapped in paper was also recovered, but the student allegedly attempted to swallow it too before senior students intervened and forced him to spit it out.

According to her, some SS3 students who appeared familiar with such substances warned that swallowing the drug raw could lead to madness.

Joy Njoku described the experience as deeply traumatic, saying it was her first time seeing hard drugs physically.

“I have not recovered from what I saw today,” she lamented, while urging parents to pay closer attention to their children, especially boys.
