The Ogun State Police Command has launched a full-scale investigation into a suspected cult-related clash that claimed the life of a yet-to-be-identified man in Abeokuta on Sunday.

The incident, which occurred around 2:45 p.m. along Wasimi Ake Road between Centenary Hall and Lotus Bank, towards the Ijemo Agbadu axis, reportedly involved rival cult groups.

In a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, the command clarified that the violence did not take place at Ake Palace and was not connected to any political gathering, including the Yayi Progressive Movement inauguration held at the palace.

According to the police, preliminary findings revealed that gunshots were fired during the clash, causing panic among residents as the suspected hoodlums fled into adjoining streets.

“Detectives from the Oke Itoku Division responded swiftly to distress calls and were deployed to the scene,” the statement read.

Babaseyi said the operatives found a victim, identified simply as “Stone,” with severe gunshot wounds at the scene.

He was immediately rushed to the State Hospital, Ijaiye, Abeokuta, in collaboration with the State Ambulance Service, where he was confirmed dead by a doctor.

The body has been deposited at the hospital morgue for a post-mortem examination.

The police spokesperson disclosed that a manhunt had been launched for those responsible for the attack, with detectives pursuing credible leads to ensure their arrest and prosecution.

He added that normalcy had been restored in the area, with heightened security presence to forestall further violence.

The command urged residents to remain calm but vigilant and to provide useful information that could aid the ongoing investigation.

Residents were also encouraged to report suspicious activities through the command’s emergency lines, including the Gateway Shield toll-free number, 0800 000 9111, and other listed contacts.
