The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) faction led by Kabiru Turaki has announced plans to formally ratify former President Goodluck Jonathan as its presidential candidate for the 2027 general elections.
The decision is expected to be concluded at a special national convention scheduled to hold on Saturday in Abuja, according to a joint statement issued on Thursday by party officials.
The statement, signed by Ini Ememobong, the faction’s national publicity secretary and Theophilus Shan, national organising secretary confirmed that Jonathan’s nomination will be officially endorsed during the convention.
The party had earlier waived its screening requirements for the former president, describing him as a former head of state who does not need to undergo the usual vetting process for aspirants.
Jonathan’s emergence follows internal party deliberations that cleared him as the sole aspirant for the ticket.
The development comes shortly after a federal high court in Abuja dismissed a legal challenge questioning his eligibility to contest the 2027 presidential election, ruling that the plaintiff lacked the legal standing to bring the case before the court.
The court also imposed a fine on the plaintiff, strengthening Jonathan’s path to the contest.
The Turaki-led faction welcomed the judgment, describing it as a confirmation of legal clarity around the former president’s eligibility and saying it clears the way for what it called a “rescue mission” ahead of the 2027 polls.
Jonathan, who served as Nigeria’s president between 2010 and 2015, remains a key figure in the country’s political landscape.
The PDP, however, continues to face internal divisions, with a rival faction recently announcing its own presidential candidate ahead of the elections.
