Operatives of the Anambra State Police Command have rescued an unidentified elderly man who collapsed beside Dozzy Filling Station along the Onitsha-Owerri Road in the Okpoko area of the state.
The incident reportedly caused temporary disruption to vehicular and pedestrian movement along the busy highway before police officers arrived at the scene.
Witnesses said many passersby were initially reluctant to approach the victim because they could not determine the circumstances surrounding his collapse.
A nearby shop owner said some people feared the man may have been under the influence of an unknown substance.
However, police operatives attached to the Okpoko Division later intervened and rushed the unconscious man to a hospital, where he is currently receiving treatment.
Confirming the development in a statement on Wednesday, the spokesperson of the command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said the officers found the man during routine patrol operations.
He said: “The Anambra State Police Command has continued to demonstrate its commitment to protecting lives and showing compassion to members of the public.
“This follows the rescue of an unconscious male pedestrian beside Dozzy Filling Station along the Onitsha/Owerri Road, Okpoko.”
Ikenga added that the command was concerned about the victim’s condition and appealed to the public for help in identifying him.
“Police operatives attached to Okpoko Division, while on routine foot patrol, found the yet-to-be-identified aged man lying unconscious and immediately rushed him to the hospital, where he is currently receiving medical attention.
“The Command is concerned about the condition of the victim and urges members of the public who may have useful information regarding his identity, family, or residence to report to the Okpoko Police Division or contact the Command for necessary action,” he said.
In a related development, the command also announced that it had paid the second-term school fees of five pupils who excelled academically in their various schools.
According to Ikenga, the gesture fulfilled a promise made during activities marking the National Police Day celebration.
He said the initiative was aimed at encouraging academic excellence and supporting education in the state.
“The Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, noted that the Police remain committed not only to maintaining law and order but also to supporting initiatives that positively impact the lives of Ndi Anambra, especially the younger generation,” the statement added.
The command further assured residents of its commitment to combining security operations with community-focused programmes aimed at strengthening public trust and development.
