The lawmaker representing Yagba Federal Constituency, Leke Abejide, has announced his resignation from the African Democratic Congress (ADC), citing internal wrangling, alleged hijack of the party, and ongoing legal uncertainties.
Speaking to journalists in Abuja, Abejide described his decision as difficult but unavoidable, blaming unnamed actors for destabilising the party he said he helped nurture into national relevance.
He disclosed that he had filed a suit in August 2025 at the Federal High Court against key figures in the party, including former Senate President David Mark, ex-Osun State governor Rauf Aregbesola, and former chairman Ralph Nwosu, over alleged irregularities in the party’s leadership structure.
According to him, although the case was granted accelerated hearing, it suffered repeated delays, which he attributed to the defendants’ legal manoeuvres.
He noted that the situation coincided with the release of the 2027 election timetable by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Abejide said the lack of duly recognised national officers to endorse nomination forms created uncertainty about his candidacy, prompting him to seek an alternative platform.
“My counsel advised that since the party lacks valid leadership to sign nomination forms as required by law, I should move elsewhere,” he said.
He further alleged that the ADC had been overtaken by politicians from other parties, whose actions, he claimed, undermined its founding ideals.
The lawmaker dismissed claims of his expulsion, insisting he voluntarily left the party in line with constitutional provisions.
“I was said to have been expelled on April 14, 2026, but I exited willingly and have terminated my membership,” he clarified.
Abejide, who has run under the ADC since 2019, maintained that he played a major role in building the party, including funding its activities and expanding its presence nationwide.
He also hinted at aligning with the “Renewed Hope Agenda” of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, suggesting a possible shift toward the ruling camp.
Addressing a viral video involving the President’s Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila, he said his remarks were made in jest and misinterpreted.
Abejide expressed gratitude to his supporters in Kogi State and beyond, reaffirming his resolve to pursue his political ambition on a more stable platform.
