Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Federal Executive Council following the approval of Phase 1A of the Lagos Green Line Rail Project.

Sanwo-Olu, in a statement shared via his official X handle on Friday, May 1, described the approval as a major milestone in the state’s drive to transform urban transportation and improve residents’ quality of life.

“On behalf of the Government and people of Lagos State, I express my sincere gratitude to His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Federal Executive Council for the approval of Phase 1A of the Lagos Green Line Rail Project,” the governor said.

He disclosed that the proposed rail line will span approximately 68 kilometres, connecting Marina to the Lekki Free Trade Zone, with about 17 stations across key commercial and residential hubs including Victoria Island, Ajah, and the Lekki corridor.

According to him, the project is expected to serve up to 500,000 passengers daily at inception, with the capacity to scale up to about one million over time.

“With the ability to move up to 35,000 passengers per hour in each direction, the line will reduce travel time and relieve pressure on our road network,” Sanwo-Olu stated.

The governor noted that the Green Line forms part of the state government’s broader commitment to improving mobility, supporting economic growth, and enhancing living standards.

“This project reflects our commitment to improving mobility, supporting economic growth, and enhancing the quality of life for Lagosians. We value the continued support of the Federal Government and remain focused on delivering a system that meets the needs of our people,” he added.

The Green Line is expected to complement existing and ongoing rail projects in Lagos as government intensify efforts to address traffic congestion and modernise public transportation.
