Suspect confesses to rape, killing of Imo nursing student

A suspect arrested in connection with the killing of a student of the College of Nursing, Obowo, Imo State, has allegedly confessed to raping and murdering the victim.

The suspect, identified as Onyema Okonkwo, was apprehended by youths of Umuadara, Umulogho community in Obowo Local Government Area following an investigation led by Chidiebere Iweajunwa., the community youth leader.

According to sources in the community, the victim, Wendy Achumba, was living alone at the time of the attack after her two roommates reportedly travelled for their nursing experience programme.

Okonkwo, in a video confession circulating online, allegedly admitted that he and another suspect identified simply as Emmanuel invaded the student’s residence around 7 p.m.

He claimed that both men took turns assaulting the nursing student after she rejected their sexual advances.

“She was the only one in the house. The other occupants had travelled, leaving her alone in the compound,” a community source said.

The suspect further alleged that after the assault, he struck the victim with a stick, while his accomplice later attacked her with a knife.

“We wanted her to agree to us, but she refused. We went to her house in the evening. I had sex with her twice, while Emmanuel did once. After that, I hit her with a stick. I did not know he later returned with a knife,” the suspect reportedly said in the video.

Community members later arrested Okonkwo and handed him over to the police for further investigation.

The Imo State Police Command was yet to officially comment on the development as of the time of filing this report.
