Jose Mourinho is set for a sensational return to Real Madrid after reportedly reaching a verbal agreement to become the club’s next manager.
According to multiple reports, the Portuguese coach has agreed to an initial two-year contract with the Spanish giants, with formal documents expected to be signed in the coming days.
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano confirmed the development on Monday.
Romano wrote: “All terms have been verbally agreed between José Mourinho and Real Madrid, waiting to sign all documents.
“Plan for initial two-year deal, JM to travel to Madrid after Real-Bilbao game.
“The Special One is back.”
Mourinho is expected to travel to Madrid after Real Madrid’s final La Liga fixture against Athletic Bilbao, where final procedures ahead of the official announcement will reportedly be completed.
If confirmed, the appointment will mark Mourinho’s second spell at the Santiago Bernabeu after his first stint between 2010 and 2013.
During his previous stay in Madrid, Mourinho won the La Liga title, Copa del Rey and Spanish Super Cup.
Reports also stated that Real Madrid are prepared to activate a clause in Mourinho’s Benfica contract which allows either side to terminate the agreement within 10 days after the Portuguese league season ends.
The clause is reportedly valued at around three million euros.
Mourinho had earlier admitted he would take time to reflect on his future after receiving a renewal offer from Benfica.
The Portuguese tactician returned to Benfica earlier in the season after replacing Bruno Lage in September.
He reportedly recorded 27 wins in 45 matches during his second spell with the Portuguese club.
Real Madrid are preparing for a managerial reset after a disappointing campaign in which they finished runners-up in La Liga, lost the Spanish Super Cup, exited the Copa del Rey in the round of 16 and were knocked out of the Champions League at the quarter-final stage.
