‘They arrived around 9AM wearing army uniforms’: Elderly Oyo resident recounts how 46 people were kidnapped (Video)

An elderly resident of Oyo State has shared a heartbreaking account of how dozens of schoolchildren and teachers were allegedly abducted during a recent attack in the Oriire Local Government Area near Ogbomoso.…....

Speaking during an interview with media personality Chude Jideonwo, the man explained that his son’s wife, who teaches at one of the affected schools, was among those reportedly taken away by the attackers.

According to him, the woman seen crying while carrying a baby in a viral video circulating online is his daughter-in-law, and the abducted victims had still not been released at the time of the interview.

“My son’s wife is teaching in that school, they have taken her away. Yes, she is the one crying in the circulating video, the woman with the baby. They are yet to release them till now, we have not seen any one of them,” he said emotionally.

During the interview, Chude Jideonwo asked whether the video was recorded before the victims were taken away, but the elderly man explained that the community still had little understanding of how the operation was carried out.

When asked if such an incident had happened in the area before, the man responded that kidnappings of that scale were unusual in the community.

“It’s not common. Even if it has happened before, it is not in this manner. We don’t agree with such things here,” he said.

Narrating the incident further, the man alleged that the attackers arrived around 9 a.m. dressed in military camouflage, making residents initially believe they were genuine security personnel.

“It was around 9 am in the morning. They passed through this route dressed in Army camouflage. We didn’t take it seriously because we thought they were soldiers. But when they got to the school junction, they entered the school and started shooting everywhere,” he recounted.

He added that panic broke out as some of the children reportedly tried to escape through windows but were unable to do so due to fear and their young age.

“Some children wanted to flee through the window, but they didn’t have the strength. They packed the children, including nursery and primary school pupils, and took them away. They moved them through the road like a flock of cattle,” he said.

The attack reportedly occurred on Friday morning, May 15, 2026, when heavily armed gunmen riding motorcycles allegedly stormed several schools in the area. Schools said to have been targeted include Community High School, Ahoro-Esinele, and Yawota Baptist Nursery and Primary School.

Community leaders claimed that about 46 persons, including seven teachers and 39 students and pupils, were abducted during the attack. However, the Oyo State Police Command earlier stated that between 25 and 32 persons were still unaccounted for as rescue operations continued.
