Popular Nigerian singer Orezi has reacted to the newly approved 150 cut-off mark for admission into Nigerian universities.
The singer shared his thoughts after the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) announced that the minimum admissible score for universities would now be 150, while polytechnics would accept 100.
Reacting via his Instagram story, Orezi appeared surprised by the new development as he compared it to his own experience years ago.
According to him, gaining admission into the University of Lagos back then was far more difficult despite scoring high in JAMB.
“What is happening? A decline in education?” he wrote.
Orezi further revealed that he scored 224 in JAMB at the time but still had only a slim chance of gaining admission into UNILAG.
“I scored 224 in jamb back then and my chances of getting admission into unilag was 30%. Finally got it … even though I didn’t get my first choice of study.”
Expressing disbelief over the new benchmark, the singer added:
“Crazy … 150 cut off mark. This kids no dey read again oo lol. Too low mehn.”
JAMB had earlier announced:
“The Heads of Tertiary Institutions in Nigeria had unanimously agreed that the Minimum Admissible Scores for admissions into Universities should be 150, Colleges of Nursing, 150, and Polytechnics, 100.”
The announcement has since sparked widespread reactions online, with many Nigerians debating whether the new cut-off mark reflects a decline in educational standards or simply a move to make tertiary education more accessible.
