Vice-President Kashim Shettima has alleged that shortly after assuming office, some individuals attempted to create mistrust between him and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu by spreading false claims about his intentions.
Speaking at the launch of “My Life of Duty and Allegiance,” the autobiography of former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, Shettima said the individuals, whom he did not name but described as being from Borno State, made damaging allegations to the President.
He said:
“Three months into our swearing in, some people told Tinubu I was planning to k+ll him to take over power.”
Shettima added that President Tinubu personally called him over the matter but found the claims unconvincing.
“The President had called me and said, ‘Sit down! Your people came to me and said stop wearing those Shettima’s clothes.’”
He further noted that Tinubu dismissed the allegations after identifying inconsistencies in the story.
“But the president said their story did not add up. He said when you gave me those clothes, I was an aspirant. I would not have been the candidate, neither were you going to be Vice presidential candidate.”
Shettima also said attempts were made to link him to harmful intentions through symbolic narratives, but the President later disregarded them.
“Some people told him after election that I was planning to use the clothes to k+ll him and take over. However, Tinubu wore the clothes after that because he is not fetish.”
He used the opportunity to call for national unity and urged Nigerians to avoid divisive narratives, stressing the need for trust and brotherhood in leadership and politics.
