Ukraine-Russia war latest: Kyiv says spike in radiation detected after Moscow arms missiles with uranium

Ukraine’s security agency says Russia used depleted uranium in a missile fired at Chernihiv Oblast in the north of the country last month.

Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) said it detected a spike in radiation levels coming from an unexploded missile that had been fired by a Russian drone.

The SBU urged members of the public to be extremely cautious if they found any debris or unexploded munitions on the ground, with the high levels of radiation recorded posing a threat to human health.

It comes as Nato chief Mark Rutte urged Ukraine’s allies to increase their expenditure in support of the war-hit nation.

He said a “limited” group of countries were leading the effort – including Sweden, Canada, Germany, the Netherlands and Denmark – but many others were “not spending enough when it comes to the support for Ukraine”.

Sweden’s prime minister Ulf Kristersson underlined similar concerns. “We need to be long term and firm in our support,” he said. “So I really would like more countries that speak so extremely well about Ukraine to also put the money where the mouth is.”
