The Ministry of Education has since confirmed that 16 girls died last night, while 79 others were left with injuries in the fire that broke out at midnight in the school.
Speaking to the Nation, a mother who rushed to the school to check on her Form 4 daughter after learning about the tragedy, said she was relieved to learn that she was okay.
However, it took her hours after arriving at the school to learn about the condition of her daughter.
“We were here by 2am, and at 6am, we were told to keep calm, since the authorities were still trying to help the students who were affected. At 8am, we were taken to the hall for an official briefing. All of us were so sad after we were told that some students died, others were injured, while others left school after escaping the fire,” she said.

“My daughter, a Form 4 student, is in the same dormitory that caught fire. It was a moment of great joy, and I thank God that she is safe. She told me that she does not understand how the fire started. All she remembers is how they woke each other up, ‘tuamkeni, kuna moto. Tuamkeni! So we are yet to understand what happened,” the mum said.
