Utumishi Girls Fire: Man shares how illness saved student he sponsors from dormitory fire

A politician in Gilgil, identified as PM Njoroge, has expressed his joy and gratitude to God after learning that Elizabeth, a student at Utumishi Girls Academy in Nakuru county, is safe.

In a Facebook post, Njoroge shared the good news that the young student survived unharmed following the tragic fire that severely affected the school.

How did Elizabeth escape the Utumishi Girls fire?

He explained that the illness turned out to be a blessing in disguise for Elizabeth’s family, as she had been sent home to receive medical care when the fire broke out at the school.

“Words cannot express how grateful I am to God today. Elizabeth, the bright young girl I’ve sponsored at Utumishi Girls since January 2024, is safe and sound. Her room is in the Meline Waithera block, but she happened to be home recovering from an illness when the devastating fire occurred,” Njoroge said.

The politician also noted that Elizabeth is a bright student who previously topped her class at Langalanga Primary School and has consistently shown great academic promise.

“I am more determined than ever to stand by her side all the way through university and watch her wildest dream of becoming a lawyer come true,” he added.

How many students died at Utumishi Girls Academy?

Some students were not as fortunate as Elizabeth, as several sustained serious injuries while others tragically lost their lives.

Sixteen bodies were recovered from the dormitory that went ablaze, leaving parents and the nation in mourning.

Seven out of the 74 injured students sustained critical injuries and were airlifted to Nairobi for specialised treatment.

Moreover, authorities investigating the incident reported that the fire may have been started by fellow students. As a result, 30 suspects were arrested and placed in police custody as investigations continue.
