The Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has expressed confidence that he can win the 2027 presidential election regardless of the level of support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu receives from state governors.
Speaking during a recent interview in Washington, D.C., Obi dismissed concerns about the political influence of governors, insisting that popular support from Nigerians remains the deciding factor in elections.
According to him, even if all 36 state governors align with President Tinubu ahead of the 2027 polls, he remains convinced of his chances of emerging victorious.
Obi pointed to his performance in the 2023 presidential election, noting that he did not have the backing of any sitting governor at the time but still secured victories in 12 states across the country.
He further alleged that he was deprived of victory in two additional states, maintaining that his electoral strength was driven by ordinary Nigerians rather than political officeholders.
“It doesn’t matter if all the 36 governors are with Tinubu, I will win in 2027. I didn’t have one governor in the last election, but I won 12 states. Even after they stole two states from me, I still won 12 states,” Obi said.
