50-Year-Old Boko Haram/ISWAP Fighter Surrenders In Borno After Fleeing Mandara Mountains Enclave

A 50-year-old woman identified as a suspected member of Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) has surrendered to troops of the Nigerian military after escaping from a terrorist enclave in the Mandara Mountains in Borno State.

Security sources confirmed that the woman, named Ghwa’a Biwa, turned herself in to troops of the 192 Battalion (Mechanised) under the ongoing counter-insurgency campaign of Operation Hadin Kai, deployed in Gwoza Local Government Area of the state.

According to military intelligence and counter-insurgency analyst Zagazola Makama, the suspect escaped from a hideout controlled by a terrorist commander identified as Wa’a before walking into a military position on June 2.

She was reportedly operating within an insurgent base located in the rugged terrain of the Mandara Mountains, a known stronghold for remnants of Boko Haram and ISWAP factions.

Preliminary interrogation indicated that worsening humanitarian conditions inside the camp—including acute shortages of food, water, and other essentials—contributed significantly to her decision to flee. Military sources also said sustained offensive operations and surveillance pressure by troops have increasingly destabilised insurgent logistics and mobility in the area.

“She was properly screened and documented upon surrender and is currently in military custody for further necessary action,” a security source said.

Officials further noted that the incident reflects a continuing pattern of defections and escapes from terrorist enclaves across the North-East, driven by intensified ground and air operations targeting insurgent hideouts.

The military maintained that while the overall security situation remains relatively calm, it is still unpredictable, adding that troops have maintained heightened operational vigilance across key flashpoints in Borno.

Authorities of Operation Hadin Kai reiterated their commitment to dismantling remaining terrorist strongholds and encouraging further surrenders from fighters and their families as part of ongoing stabilisation efforts in the region.
