The presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Atiku Abubakar, has picked former Minister of Transportation, Chibuike Amaechi, as his running mate ahead of the 2027 general election.
The development marks a significant turnaround for Amaechi, who had earlier ruled out the possibility of deputising Atiku after contesting—and losing—the party’s presidential primary.
Confirmation of the former Rivers State governor’s acceptance came on Saturday through a former Rivers State chairman of the ADC, Sampson, who simply responded “yes” when asked if Amaechi had agreed to the vice-presidential slot.
Amaechi had been one of the leading aspirants in the ADC primary but was defeated by Atiku, Nigeria’s former vice president. Following the exercise, he openly rejected the outcome, amid allegations by some aggrieved party members that the process was skewed in favour of Atiku.
Before the primary, Amaechi had also insisted that he did not purchase the party’s nomination form to settle for a vice-presidential position, a stance that underscored his initial reluctance to play second fiddle.
However, his eventual acceptance signals a possible reconciliation within the party’s ranks and may strengthen the ADC’s bid to present a formidable challenge in the next presidential election.
As of the time of filing this report, neither Atiku nor Amaechi had issued an official statement detailing the terms of the agreement or the circumstances that led to the apparent change of position.
