A notorious bandit leader identified as Kachalla Maha has sparked widespread concern after reportedly claiming he has the capacity to kidnap government officials, including state governors, and alleging that he receives confidential information about Nigeria’s security operations.
In an audio message that has circulated widely on social media and has been reported by several news outlets, Maha was quoted as saying:
“I can kidnap any government if I want, even governors. The forces they send to attack me are my boys; they inform me before coming. I receive information on national security strategy meetings involving the president. They only operate if I allow them.”
The authenticity of the audio has not been independently verified, and Nigerian security agencies have not officially confirmed the claims made by the bandit leader.
According to reports, the message followed the arrest of some of Maha’s alleged associates and the seizure of cattle believed to be linked to his criminal network. He reportedly threatened to escalate attacks and kidnappings if those detained were not released.
The claims have generated public debate, particularly the allegation that he receives advance warning of security operations. However, there is currently no publicly available evidence to support his assertions that he has access to classified government intelligence or that security personnel are working on his behalf.
Security analysts note that criminal groups often make exaggerated statements to project power, intimidate the public, and undermine confidence in government security efforts. As such, the statements should be treated as allegations until verified by competent authorities.
Banditry remains one of Nigeria’s most pressing security challenges, especially in the North-West and parts of the North-Central regions, where armed groups have been responsible for mass kidnappings, attacks on rural communities, and the displacement of thousands of residents.
