Body found in search for personal trainer missing after leaving Planet Fitness gym in South Carolina

A body has been found in the search for a personal trainer who went missing after leaving a gym in South Carolina last week.

Elena Katherine Moore, 39, has not been heard from since leaving a Planet Fitness at around 9 p.m. in Lexington on 11 June, police said. She was reported missing the following day and a search to find her was launched.

Following the appeal authorities received a tip about a sighting on the day Moore vanished, and carried out a search at the location on Wednesday.

Police and fire officials found a body “that fits the clothing description of our missing person,” Lexington Police Department Chief Terrence Green said during a press briefing.

“We are still waiting on the coroner to identify her,” he added.

Moore worked at Wolf’s Fitness Center in Lexington, Lexington Police Department Inspector Missy Silcox. She regularly visited Planet Fitness, but this disappearance was “very out of character for her,” Silcox told ABC News.

She signed into the gym at 6:40 p.m. Thursday, but made no further contact after that, police said.

Moore was captured on surveillance footage walking away from the the gym Thursday, wearing an olive-green zip-up hoodie with black athletic pants.

She was last seen in footage walking in the parking lot of a nearby Publix supermarket headed in the direction of Old Cherokee Road, at 9:17 p.m. on Thursday wearing the same clothing as reported from Planet Fitness.

Authorities said that media coverage of the case helped lead to the tip that ended with a body being found.

Lexington police have now asked the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) to conduct the death investigation.

They would not say whether foul play is suspected, citing the investigation.

“It’s an active investigation, and we are having SLED investigate that,” Green said.
